The International Journal of Machine Consciousness examines the theoretical foundations of conscious machines and
analyzes current approaches to machine consciousness. It offers unity and
visibility to a wide spread of research, which is now scattered throughout
many diverse and often unrelated journals. The journal also allows a
publication focus where scholars could present, compare and evaluate their
work on machine consciousness both from the theoretical and technical
side. Since the topic of machine consciousness is still highly controversial,
each issue will endorse a blend of papers covering provocative theories as
well as testable models. | |

Good news for cognitive science public access. "Design for a Brain" W.R. Ashby's master piece is available online in Archive.Org. It is never too late to read or re-read this pioneering and still contemporary book.

The Philosophy Department of the University of Valladolid organizes the annual Philosophy Workshop. This year the title of the workshop is Brain, understanding and action (see full program).
From ASLab, Ricardo Sanz has been invited to give a talk on "Cibernética y Filosofía de la Mente" (Cybernetics and Philosophy of Mind) and Xabier Barandiaran was accepted with an abstract entitled "Vida Mental, un efoque naturalista sobre la autonomía de la conducta" (Mental Life, a naturalized approach to the autonomy of behaviour).

Xabier Barandiaran, from the University of the Basque Country is going to stay with us for some months. The objectives of this period are:
- To advance on the theoretical integration of the cognitive robotic projects associated with the ASLAB group (including the ICEA project that is in focus with the euCognition network)
- To operationalize in terms of dynamical systems and control theory basic cognitive concepts, in particular the notions of agential identity, cognitive/mental life, normativity.
- To analyse in detail an evolutionary robotic simulation model that satisfies a minimally cognitive task, making use of dynamical system theory and information measurements of causality along dynamical processes.
This stay is supported by the euCognition network funded by the European Commission.
